Insights into the mental side of performance
Performance is about more than what we can physically do.
Whether you're stepping onto a playing field, entering a ring, walking onto a stage, leading a team, building a business, or pursuing something that matters deeply to you, there is another part of performance that often receives far less attention: the mental side.
This is where Develop Mental Performance comes in.
Why DMP?
I created Develop Mental Performance because I want athletes, teams, and the people who support them to have every opportunity to become the version of success they want to see in their sport, business, or activity.
I believe mental performance is one of the most underrated tools available to performers.
Most people already recognize that the mind matters. We talk about confidence. We talk about focus. We talk about handling pressure. We talk about overcoming adversity and performing when it matters most.
But recognizing that something is important and actually developing it as a skill are two very different things.
And that's where I believe an important gap exists.
Knowing It Matters Isn't the Same as Training It
Consider physical training.
Someone might say, “I want to get stronger.”
They might understand that strength would help them perform better. They might even know that lifting weights works.
But if they never step into a weight room, they shouldn't be surprised when their strength doesn't change.
Mental performance can be approached in much the same way.
We can acknowledge that confidence, focus, resilience, motivation, preparation, and the ability to manage pressure are important. But simply knowing that these qualities matter doesn't automatically develop them.
Mental skills require practice, just like physical skills do.
That doesn't mean every performer needs to spend hours sitting in a quiet room trying to “think positively.” Mental performance training is about learning skills, practicing them intentionally, applying them to real situations, and discovering what works for you.
Who Is DMP For?
Develop Mental Performance exists to support more than just the person competing.
DMP works with Athletes & Performers, Teams & Groups, and Coaches & Parents because performance rarely happens in isolation.
An athlete may be working to become more confident under pressure.
A performer may be trying to develop greater focus and consistency.
A team may be working to strengthen communication and collective performance.
A coach may want better tools for supporting the mental development of their athletes.
A parent may want to understand how they can support their performer without unintentionally adding to the pressure.
Different people may have different needs, but the underlying idea remains the same:
The mental side of performance is something we can intentionally develop.
Developing the Mental Side of Performance
At DMP, I don't believe there is a single mental skill that magically unlocks better performance.
Mental performance is a process.
It involves understanding where you are, identifying where you want to go, developing the skills that can help you get there, applying those skills when they matter, and reflecting on what you learn along the way.
Sometimes development means building confidence.
Sometimes it means learning how to refocus after a mistake.
Sometimes it means preparing for pressure before it arrives.
And sometimes it means simply learning more about yourself as a performer.
The goal isn't to eliminate every difficult thought, emotion, mistake, or challenging moment.
The goal is to become better equipped to navigate them.
Welcome to The DMP
This is what I hope The Develop Mental Perspective becomes: a place to explore the mental side of performance.
I'll be sharing insights, ideas, strategies, and perspectives surrounding mental performance and the people who experience it.
Some posts may focus on specific mental skills. Others may explore performance environments, coaching, development, or the experiences that shape us as performers.
My hope is that something you read here gives you a new perspective, a new question to consider, or perhaps even a reason to begin training a part of your performance that you've always known mattered.
Because knowing that the mind matters is only the beginning.
You can train it, too.
